last time i bothered doing the napkin math, it really wouldn’t take much to reduce the national debt to more sustainable pre-9/11 levels. just tax rich cunts (anyone who is a milllionaire) at 60-70’s level of taxation for 4 years and it would be paid down to that level within 1 election cycle

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•People espousing that unions don't work should have a look at police unions.
1·5 days agowell that’s obvious to anyone whose not been indoctrinated from birth by US propaganda.
police unions though are not unions in the traditional sense, they’re closer to protection rackets.

1·5 days agopolice unions arent organized against an abusive management though they’re organized against the public they supposedly serve and protect, which they also have the monopoly of violence over.
if you really wanted to reign in police unions…just make em pay all their abuse of force lawsuits out of their pensions. they’d create a national database tracking/banning cereal shitbags real quick

2·5 days agoone of the biggest tools used in america to break unions is creating a 2-tier workforce (incentivizes one group deciding to work less-hard, which builds resentment) and by purposefully lowering hiring standards. lotta unions in the US really are complacent, seemingly having forgotten that these same capitalists they regularly fail to bargain with have literally attempted to murder them multiple times within living memory.
when all you know is the farm…you don’t realize just how much better it could be, i guess.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Some people think because human history exists on a macro level they play some part in shaping it because they made a meme once.
2·5 days agopeople regularly obsess about that 1 little thing they did/didn’t do years ago and how it dramatically changed their life for the worse, whilst also fantasizing about how they could dramatically change some big/grand part of the present by making one change in the past, all at the same time as convincing themselves they’re incapable of changing the future.

83·7 days agolol, next you’ll wonder if India is better off today for having overthrown the brits, too.
fucking yes, they were a bunch of sadistic fucks destroying everything they could in the name of profit.
the worst descendants of those sick fucks got shunned to america, for being too fucking crazy. they eventually schismed into what is now known as american protestants/various other brands of fundamentalist christians
protestants, all evangelical christians really, fundamentally do not respect consent. they have tied their own supposed eternal salvation onto the idea that they must “save” everyone else by spreading the Good Word by any means necessary…desperate people like that are not stable.
