Honestly, 2% cut is nothing. If you like your new job better for whatever reason, less stressful, more fulfilling, whatever, 2% is less than nothing, your personal life matters and should weight in.
I don’t know about your career paths, but I could see it being a problem if there was opportunity to grow in the old job but not on the new one. But everything else being the same, an insignificant pay cut to do something you like significantly more is a win in my book.
Any CPU under 100 will take forever to install Gentoo, plus if 100MB is an issue Gentoo will not work for you either. Also you don’t need 1TB, and 1TB HDDs are way cheaper if you’re that tight for space. I have systems with less than 100GB dedicated to the OS and they run great, so you can get a $30 SSD and not worry about disk space for your system ever again.

Why do you think Mint/Ubuntu/Fedora/Bazzite are not that though? It seems you don’t know how to ask your system to do stuff because otherwise your Arch install wouldn’t break. Plus I bet that the default installation of any of those distros occupies around the same disk space than what you have now.
Honestly you read like an angsty teen who read Arch is advanced and wants to be 1337 by using it, a few years back you would have been using Kali. Let me tell you a secret, Arch is not advanced, it’s a very easy straightforward distro, it just starts from a mostly clean slate, but if you’re using gnome/kde/cinnamon or any DE that distros come prepacked with its just as bloated with extra steps.

We’re talking less than 100MB here, if your disk space is that limited you should really consider upgrading. Especially if you’re going to try Gentoo, because not only it requires more disk space but if you can’t afford a cheap 1TB drive chances are your CPU will take a week to install Gentoo since you need to compile everything.
Because they occupy so small disk size that they don’t matter and it’s easier to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I wouldn’t call hardware support bloat ware.
Also, just so you know, Arch has Bluetooth and wifi compatibility even if you don’t install the packages, Gentoo does not. You would need to recompile your kernel with the correct configuration to enable those for your specific card.
Arch is just as bloated as Fedora, Mint or Bazzite. Hell, my Arch is a lot more bloated than any of those. This is Linux, the system is as bloated as you want it to be, but also having stuff installed doesn’t necessarily causes your computer to be slow, programs only execute when you tell them to.
I’m sorry for being blunt, but Arch is very easy and plug-and-play like, if you’re having these sorts of issues my guess is that you’re not familiar with Linux and are doing stuff “wrong” (e.g. installing drivers from a website). Gentoo is a LOT more complicated and will hold your hand a lot less than Arch, I recommend you try something more beginning friendly like Mint, Fedora or Bazzite, learn the basics, learn the “Linux way” of doing stuff, then try Arch again, then, when you have a better reason than because I broke it, you can try Gentoo.
This is not a “you’re too dumb to do it” answer, but imagine someone who’s having issues driving a shift stick car asking how it’s like to rebuild the engine. You’re capable of rebuilding the engine yourself, you’re able to use Gentoo, just not now, learn to walk before you try to bungee jump.
Nope, but gaming was essentially non-existing. We had almost no native title, and wine while great was very hit or miss. I remember having to tweak a lot for each game, from the basic whine version to the DLLs installed, etc, usually going only by what was on WineHQ, or troubleshooting yourself on guesses. Eventually PlayOnLinux was created and we had a repository of a “stable” way to run a game, but it was still bad. Eventually some Indie games started releasing for Linux, and I swore off wine except for some very specific stuff. When Steam was released for Linux, it was a great time, and some native games came our way. And then Proton happen and while lots of us were a bit uncertain about it, it turned out to be great, and thanks to that we’re now in a state where the majority of games just work.
But back to your question, the general Linux experience outside of gaming (and other software compatibility) was not much different than today, with the exception of Xorg configurations, which I still to this day remember I don’t have to do anymore and immediately all other problems seem insignificant.
I get him though, mouse wheel click for a secondary copy buffer is one of the main things that’s extremely annoying to me when I have to use Windows, I can never retrain my brain to stop doing it and I get annoyed that it doesn’t work until I remember why.
The short answer is because I’m lazy. I might lose 30 min during the system setup instead of 20, and now I have a system that I don’t have to worry about until the hardware gives up.
Arch is a rolling release distro, which means it’s unstable, which doesn’t mean what you think, instead it means that you can update your system indefinitely without worrying about “versions”. For example, if you had Ubuntu 20.04 installed on your server, in may you had to update it to 24.04, and that’s something that can cause issues. And in 2029 you’ll need to go through that again. Arch is just constant updates without having that worry. Which means no library is safe from updates, ergo unstable.
Also the AUR is huge, and I’m a lazy ass who likes to just be able to install stuff without having to add PPAs or installing stuff by hand.
Also there’s the whole customize the system, I use a very particular set of programs that just won’t come pre installed anywhere, so any system that comes with their own stuff will leave me in a system with double the amount of programs for most stuff which is just wasteful.
Finally there’s the wiki, while the vast majority of what’s there serves you in other systems, if you’re running Arch it’s wonderful, it even lists the packages you need to install to solve specific errors.
It would be very tedious to type all of that on my TV, even if I could get mpv on it, and my TV/projector had hardware capabilities to decode the media, not to mention the difficulty in keeping my history between different devices or for different people. You’re clearly not understanding the problem Jellyfin solves, it’s like someone saying “why do we need Lemmy when we can write files on our samba shares” (which btw you should definitely not expose to the internet)
However, I will issue caution to others who may believe themselves to be higher on the tech savvy ladder: forget most of what you do with Windows and accept that Linux, no matter the distro or DE, is not going to be 100% like your previous Windows experiences. Tech peeps typically have a high level of OS/system customization. These don’t usually translate well to a non-Windows OS. On other “managed” operating systems, you might try things, but not be able to really do damage. If you try to force it with Linux, you will fuck yourself.
This, right here, if you’re a tech savvy windows user considering migrating, read the above until you’ve internalized it. Don’t trust me? Go watch Linus from LTT use Linux and break everything in a matter of hours because he literally answered “Yes, I know what I’m doing” when he had no idea.
It’s my experience that tech savvy windows users know enough to be a danger to themselves, and worse, have the confidence to shoot themselves in the foot.

Yes, you need Nvidia closed source drivers, especially if you want to play games. Although you had no way of knowing this if you hadn’t interacted with the community before, this is well known and part of the reason most of us who’ve been here a while use and recommend AMD.
Shes all switched to linux, and if her trial goes well and i don’t end up tearing my hair out doing tech support. I may switch over as well, probably a different distro though.
That’s an interesting approach, I usually experiment on stuff myself before making others switch, makes me more comfortable on the stuff and more confident that I’ll be able to solve their issues.

The game wouldn’t open if the controller was connected via Bluetooth? That’s weird, or did you mean that you had issues with making the game run and after that the Xbox controller wouldn’t connect?. For the Xbox controller thing I will assume you’re 100% sure it has a Bluetooth chip (not all of them do), I’m not sure how it’s in Bazzite but in other distros you need to install xpadneo to get them working via Bluetooth, they also need to be in a updated firmware (but I never had to do this step), you can read about it here even though you’re not using Arch, their wiki is extremely helpful.

You’re almost correct, for legal reasons Steam can’t include transcoding for certain proprietary video formats that games love to use. There’s an alternative version to proton called Proton-GE (or GloriousEggroll because that’s the name of the maintainer), it includes those codecs plus some other extra fixes, as a general rule it’s always better to use it. To use it you either download it from the release page and extract it in ~/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d and restart steam, or using ProtonUp if it’s available for you which will make things easier on the long run.

Probably it’s not, probably what happens is that the GPU is throttling and not reaching the same performance, and with less performance comes less heat. Try running a benchmark to see if there’s any significant difference in performance.
