Didn’t expect to laugh this loudly to a comment on one of my pictures this late at night 😆. Thanks!

Linux@lemmy.ml•I just found out my fiancee wants to switch to linux, lets start a distro war, what should be her first? + other questionsEnglish
3·19 days agoEven as an EndeavourOS user, I concur: Mint. Why? Cinnamon is hands down the best desktop environment. Beginner friendly default without blasting features in one’s face with configs all over the place, yet intuitively customizable for experienced Linux users.
This means she will be able to freely use it without your help, but you will be able to easily fine tune it to her preferences as well.

Sorry, I thought we were spitballing Harry Potter names 🧙.
Thank you. Yeah, no adjustments whatsoever. Except for an occasional crop I stopped doing that half a decade ago because I dislike embellishing what my eyes saw.

11·29 days agoMy confidence that these reports aren’t distortions of the truth is slim considering banks run on greed. Their track record doesn’t help either.

Ah yes, banks, the bastions of truth and moral conduct.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why can't we have a static vintage web?English
3·29 days agoI honestly tend to think that instead of using search engines where you already have to know what you’re looking for, it might be better to use something like lemmy where you can advertise what you made with a post in an appropriate community.
Obviously both have their place, but POSSE is the magic sauce:
“POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, the practice of posting content on your own site first, then publishing copies or sharing links to third parties (like social media silos) with original post links to provide viewers a path to directly interacting with your content.” ―https://indieweb.org/POSSE

“The need for discovery
Nothing you do to try to make the web a better place matters if nobody can find what you did. There are a lot of precious websites out there that deserve an audience, but instead are languishing in obscurity.
This makes alternative discovery mechanisms an urgent priority of the free and independent web, both document search as well as blog and RSS-feed discovery.”

Cinnamon. After using Xfce and KDE Plasma for years, and having testing Gnome, Budgie, etc., Cinnamon feels like it took the best ingredients from all of them.

The beauty of Linux is the triviality of creating an alias that runs whatever long or short update command by typing “upd” or “release_the_epstein_files”. E.g.,
~/.bashrc, place:
alias release_the_epstein_files="sudo pacman -Syu --noconfirm"

Linux@lemmy.ml•Hi, I want to install Linux along side Win 10.English
1·2 months agoEven though I use EndeavourOS (Arch easy installer), I won’t hesitate to vouch for Mint. I’m using its Cinnamon desktop environment (DE) and it’s the best user experience I’ve had after having used Xfce, KDE Plasma, Budgie, Gnome, et cetera.

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•A return to visiting websites directly rather than searching seems to have been forced upon us. Would it be useful to build a wiki for web resources so people can find and bookmark websites by topic?English
6·2 months agoI like the sociable aspect of webrings, literally paying it forward and backward to two arbitrary websites on your own website. However, I don’t see how it helps searching for and finding a specific website as one would have to traverse the whole ring. A search engine incorporating the whole ring resolves this though.
As for OP’s specific question, synced bookmarks go a long way. I’ve also got quick terminal commands so I can immediately search on a website without having to open the browser and going to that website first.
A Secret Web by Benjamin Hollon [found on lobste.rs] is a great read; there I discovered nifty little search engines that specifically search the Small Web, such as Marginalia Search.
I come from Vivaldi, and Zen was the only customizable powerhouse that equaled the former. Next to Zen I also use LibreWolf, and Waterfox on Android.
