Because if google kills side loading on all non custom os devices, that removes the incentive for open source developers to make software if there is no way to distribute it. So even custom OS’s will feel this unfortunately. We might still have viable options, but nothing like we see today.

My gf has an xppen tablet and loves it. But it runs android. I haven’t looked into if I can easily install an alternative os.

I’ve used mullvad before and it was a great experience. As far as anonymity goes, I don’t think you can do any better than mullvad where you even have privacy friendly payment options. That said, I haven’t used proton VPN so I’m not sure how they compare feature-wise
