I use tailscale for exactly this purpose. And with the added benefit of bring able to watch media and manage the device remotely and easily
I’ve seen TV’s really aggressively closing background apps - on my friends android TV, it would close Tailscale very soon after switching apps. I had to disable that behavior in CLI.
