  • During this time of year (holiday season) … mine is fruitcake … the darker, heavier, thicker - the better for me. But only as a treat once in a while, otherwise I’d end up with diabetes by New Years. My mom used to make her own basic recipe this time of year.

There is a supplier in Canadian stores from the east coast that I like … McFadgen’s Bakery in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia … they make a variety and the best to me is the deep dark brown cake.

The other food we’ve enjoyed that we learned about from our Italian friends is … Panettone … which local stores used to supply with great big cakes this time of year but over the past three or four years, the supply is less and the cakes are smaller. Toasted with a bit of a butter was always a treat.

Replaced my lawn with clover … now it’s always green no matter the weather (even now under a foot of snow, it’s still leafy green) … and several times in the summer, the flowers bloom and the bees visit them. Over the years, I keep planting wild flowers around the edges of the lawn. Not much there but I keep expanding it every year.

  • Native women are as tough as most men. We were scared of my mom but she was also the most loving person you would ever meet. She could hunt, fish, trap and carry things as much as any man … watching her skin, hide and butcher large animals and you’d swear she had arms of Popeye. Both my sisters are the same and if you ever get caught in a fight with them, they’d beat the hell out of you as much as any man.
