  • Just now seeing your comment. I was using Nobara my monitors just freeze as in become completely unresponsive and it was entirely random. And there was a keyboard combo that was designed to fix it and that didn’t work then the community’s answer was, “we don’t know.”

To me the Linux systems are great but the community acts as if people shouldnjust switch without a second thought then get rally together when someone says, “I am having issues and don’t understand.” The Linux community then almost always proceeds to say, “did you try Googling it?” What would the person even know to Google if they don’t even know entirely what they are facing and when Linux issues get involved you are deep diving into Terminal and bash commands and most people barely understand how a Driver in Windows works or how to uninstall it. Then the response from the sake community is, “well clearly your the issue.” Its just odd to sell something the community won’t really assist with but then get offended when someone doesn’t want to switch.

  • Ah yes, another prime example that demonstrates that Lemmy is no different than Reddit. Everyone thinks they are a professional online.

Nothing sensitive should ever lack encryption especially in the hands of a third party company managing your data claiming you are safe and your privacy is protected.

No one is invincible and it’s okay to criticize the apps we hold to high regards. If your are pissed people are shitting on Signal you should be pissed Signal gave people a reason to shit on them.

  • I have been using Blokada 6 which is a subscription based VPN service. There is a decentralized service called Matrix that lets you run the Fediverse version of Discord called Element.

Element is where I heard of Mullvad and learned more about VPNs and how they work or how most of them operate.

Here is what you need to know if you want a standard VPN that just blocks ads and does the basics there are plenty out there, Blokada 6 being one of the best.

If you are truly concerned and care about your data being encrypted from point to point then there are very few of those. The benefit to Mullvad is it does just this and is tested by it’s users and they are based in Sweden. There is a classification of people o like to call paranoid but those same people genuinely love Mullvad, sooooo. I gave it a shot.

The company doesn’t believe in a subscription model. You pay as you want and go and can even pay for it by mail. Here is what I like. Mullvad offers a browser based on Tor that Tor trusts.

Mullvad will protect you using Open VPN or WireGaurd if you like data encryption on your network work. Not only that it will actively monitor and tell you if you have a DNS leak which is when your DNS isn’t being protected properly and can potentially be seen by your network providers and others. Not only this, it works, it isn’t slow, and it’s encrypted all the way around.

I will be switching to Mullvad permanently once my next Blokada payment comes out.

  • An easy barrier of entry isn’t always the issue at hand. I think what the user is saying, hate Google or not, you are at the very least safe to some degree. A lot of people don’t realize that VPNS are just ways of manipulating where your data goes and who sees it and that VPNs can be abused as services even if they aren’t Google.

Those same services can sell your data just the same as Google. Let’s not forget that the “mega corp” everyone loves to hate is the reason you have Android competing against iOS which is part of another mega corp. People on Lemmy should get the fuck off their high horses.
