PumpkinSkink@lemmy.worldto Linux@lemmy.ml•I swapped the entire school computers to linux mint73·5 months agoJust a funny story, but, I use an Ubuntu laptop as my work computer as a teacher, and once, while I was helping another student with work, a student opened my laptop and began trying to install Roblox. She got far enough to figure out it wouldn’t work, and started searching for how to install it. When I came over she was trying to figure out how to set up Wine. She got pretty close to getting it working before I came over. I was secretly pretty impressed with how fast she figured it out. It couldn’t have been more than a few minutes.
Ubuntu. It was reccomended to me by a few of my mor knowledgeable friends, and I haven’t had any major issues with it. The operating system is doing what I need it to and I just can’t find any motivation to want to change.
PumpkinSkink@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do European Leftist call their government's right wing despite having free healthcare?192·6 months agoI’m just gonna post the Cory Doctorow quote
"Take politics: One common refrain is that ‘‘I don’t even know what right or left even mean anymore, they’re just tribal identities.’’ Many years ago, I said something very like this to Steven Brust, who skewered me with his response:
‘‘‘Left’ and ‘right’ mean the same thing today that they’ve meant since the French Revolution. Ask someone, ‘What’s more important: property rights, or human rights?’ If they answer: ‘Property rights are human rights,’ they are on the right.’’"
PumpkinSkink@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do smokers specifically seem to be disproportionally bad for littering?613·8 months agoBecause there aren’t any fucking public trash cans and noone is carrying that shit. Same reason you see nips everywhere.
An aside, but the “parasite” thing is not really a leftist talking point. We stole it from Adam fucking Smith, and his point about it is that extracting value from something on the basis of just, like, owning something that exists with or without you is inherently shitty personally, and economically.
“As soon as the land of any country has all become private property, the landlords, like all other men, love to reap where they never sowed and demand a rent even for its natural produce” - Adam Smith
Just look it up. He crashes out on rentiers all the time.
Also, corporate land lords are a much smaller part of the problem than most people suggest. Like, yes corporate land lords suck, but most land lords are not corporate landlords. It’s more complex than that. Source. So, Yes. Small “Mom and Pop” landlords are bad, and there is a moral dimension to even the people you personally know who own more than one home, and there will continue to be as long as there are others who do not have a house.
Coincidentally my windows PC needed to update when I got back to it. It took like 15 minutes and 2 restarts. I legit pulled out my Ubuntu laptop and Sudo apt-get upgraded that bitch just to flex on Bill Gates.
I don’t know about all the arguing and snark, but… I’ve been using Ubuntu (laugh it up) on my work laptop for the last 3ish years, and the vast majority of the time it really is “click install updates. wait 2 minutes. ok every program on your computer is up to date, just don’t forget to restart Firefox”. Can’t think of a time where updating sucked. Sometimes I even go through the terminal just because it makes me feel cool to be a hackerman.
I dread updating my windows pc at home. Cuts into my WoW time too much.
