Fediverse@lemmy.world•Fediverse wide cross-instance / cross-platform link substitution [UX improvement thoughts]English
4·8 days agoCheck out the linked thread asking for Reddit alternatives.
I am talking about the population of people interested in alternative platforms, so maybe like 1-2% of the Reddit’s MAUs at most. I was pretty clear about this:
…among users who are looking for alternatives to American oligarchic technology services
…
…is a massive turn off for the exact target market of the Fediverse
The market for Fedi is clearly not the total unique MAU count of American social services.
I feel like I should make a joke about not reading an article and just commenting about the headline. :)

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Fediverse wide cross-instance / cross-platform link substitution [UX improvement thoughts]English
6·8 days agoI’ve seen that being used. It works fine for more technical users, but it’s just an extra pain point.
- If you make links, you need to apply the service
- Different UI from whatever instance/client/platform that you are using.
I much prefer Piefed’s soon to be released link substitution feature.

Linux@programming.dev•Haiku OS Sees Port Of Go 1.18 Programming LanguageEnglish
10·8 days agoI feel like I’ve been following Haiku (and ReactOS) for a quarter of a century. I believe I even installed BeOS with Haiku components (I think they originally functioned as a set of addons to the final BeOS release) way back in the day.

Linux@programming.dev•LoongArch32 Support Begins Taking Shape In Linux 6.19, GCC 16English
1·8 days agoWhy does LoongArch even need a 32-bit variant? Is this for embedded? Is LoongArch even suitable for embedded use cases (versus say those micro-controller designs from ARM, RISC-V or some of those fully custom embedded architectures)?

Fediverse@lemmy.world•How feasible would it be to host Mastodon, Pixelfed, Lemmy, Friendica, or Matrix over Tor/I2P?English
3·9 days agoI believe I2P is more for things like torrents.
I’ve been meaning to test it out (I seem to remember that it’s possible to run it side by side), but haven’t got a chance yet.

Android@lemdro.id•The $2,400 Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold sold out in minutesEnglish
2·9 days agoWhile it was previously reported that Samsung was only looking to manufacture ~20,000 to ~30,000 TriFold units, its quick sellout could be seen as a positive.
Is this 20-30K for the initial batch or lifetime? That’s a critical point.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Still relevant, hasnt changed much after 2 yearsEnglish
1·13 days agoTbh, and I plan to do this for piefed.social soon (and rimu has given me the go-ahead) - abandoned discarded communities with literally zero posts need to be purged by instances. It’s just clutter.
Cool, it’s a good idea. But there are also other instances.
Then there is the issue of communities with a large number of subs but where the last post was 7 months ago and they have 0 MAUs. While a community with a lot less subs can have several posts per week and at least some MAUs (couple of hundred).

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Still relevant, hasnt changed much after 2 yearsEnglish
19·14 days agoYou have comments from different communities under the same URL post. “Multicommunities” but without user intervention.
It does have some drawbacks. For example, under this post, I can see comments from an earlier post (referring to the same URL) from over a year ago.
Piefed is also a platform, in addition to Piefed servers being instances and clients.

1·14 days agoWhen my laptop was my primary device, I still had an external monitor/keyboard/mouse (our work also had the same setup); that being said I still got a 17 inch laptop.
For me personally, I don’t mind the weight/bulk in exchange for a larger laptop screen.

Linux@programming.dev•Newbie with kubuntu - tips?English
4·5 months agoHaven’t used Kubuntu so can’t help you with that.
Regarding installing application from 3rd parties, there is no guaranteed way to know that what you’re installing is clean.
That being said, I would argue basic evaluations (how long has the project been around, does it get mentioned a lot in articles and forums, are there a lot of star and activity on the guthub page?) should be good enough for regular operational security.
One other general tip, try using Gemini (the LLM by Google) for real-time support and explanations around Kubuntu. I find it helpful for guidance on complex applications (ones that are far more niche than Kubuntu).

The question is how soon.
The bubble can go on for a long time with circular financing schemes and it has full backing of the US gov.
It’s worth pointing out that lack of RIO has been a thing for a while now.
