I am having a pretty stresful time with this, especially since today I just noticed my windows folder explorer just changed the directory folder in my computer to my real name - something I know for sure I didn’t do when I made a microsoft account. That scares me. I want out of windows now.

Is there an easy-to-digest user’s guide for switching? I’ve had my toes in the water for years on switching but now with Mircosoft being facsists, I’m all in on wanting to switch. Used windows my whole life but I don’t mind switching one bit.

Yep, that’s exactly what’s happening here with me (I had to disconnect from Proton to submit this reply, then reconnect). Not sure if it’s an issue with Lemmy or Proton.

Firefox with ublock origin for both desktop and mobile.

Those two programs alone block out like 75% of the annoyances and dangers of the modern internet. Near-complete removal of ads and a couple nice healthy adware and malware guards on top of that.

Add on a VPN and a few more Firefox extensions and I feel that I can browse the net anxiety-free.
