(she/they)
Hi! You can call me Tadpole. I enjoy maps/geography, sci-fi and speculative fiction, classic and sports cars and motorsports, and retro and retrofuturistic technology from the 70s-90s. Also a racing, role-playing, indie and retro video game connossieur.
I am a certified lurker.

What are some of your favourite PS2 games?English4·6 months agoCars, NFS Hot Pursuit 2 (and Underground 2), Test Drive Unlimited, and The Simpsons Game (and Hit & Run). Mostly racing games lol.
SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•USA President term limitsEnglish1·10 months agoAlso, given how Trump’s been even more incoherent and irrational in this election compared to 2016’s, I’d be surprised if he’s still grounded enough in reality (or even alive) to seek more terms in 2028 - he’s already in his 80s and doesn’t live a healthy lifestyle; he has supercharged billionaire-only medicine, but there are only so many miracles that medicine can do.
I guess maybe the Republicans would try to keep him as a front for PR (like a puppet president) while hiding the fact that he’s senile from the population, and governing from the shadows. Which I suppose is barely better than direct rule from Trump himself.
SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•USA President term limitsEnglish3·10 months agoNow I’m curious: if Person A serves two full terms as US president, then Person B (from the same party) runs and chooses A as their vice-president, and then steps down, what would happen? Would A be unable to be picked as B’s Vice President in first place, or would A simply be legally unable to be sworn in as President after B stepped down and the Speaker of the House gets the position instead?
SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Chat@beehaw.org•how's your week going, BeehawEnglish17·10 months ago…Awful?
It’s so fitting and poetic that, just when I finally start getting my life in order, the world throws itself off a cliff.
Came here to suggest Unbound too!
SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Serious statement: I don't understand the argument that not voting for Harris was the morally correct thing to do, because of Gaza. Why does anyone believe this?English5·10 months agoI’m not hopeful. I’ve already seen centrists and pundits saying that Harris lost because she’s “too progressive” and that Dems need to move further right.
Given Dems’ track record, I’m dreading 2028 is going to be JD Vance versus fucking RFK Jr. or Joe Manchin. At least the only silver lining out of THAT shitshow will be seeing the Democratic Party completely implode after completely alienating their voter base to become a carbon copy of the Republican Party (while Repub voters just keep voting R) and hopefully pave ground for an actual progressive party replace them, but that will hardly offset the horrors of 8 years of unrestrained fascism (assuming the left wins in 2032 🥲)
This is currently me with modded Kerbal Space Program and Cities: Skylines lol
I completely forgot but apparently I joined Lemmy exactly one year ago lol

SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto RetroGaming@lemmy.world•PlayStation 1 emulator DuckStation changes license for no commercial use and no derivativesEnglish2·11 months agoWhoa whoa whoa whoa, WHAT? I don’t use RetroArch most of the time (I find its UI rather inconvenient), but I had no idea its main developer was transphobic, can you tell me more?
SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Linux@lemmy.ml•What is the most duct-tape thing you've done to Linux?English8·1 year agoI’m not technically inclined at all, so the most duct tapey thing I can remember was hacking Gnome to use Nemo as my file browser instead of Gnome’s default file browser once.
SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Linux@lemmy.ml•/media or /mnt or anywhere ? Discussion.English14·1 year agoUse any you want. I’ve been mounting my internal secondary hard drive on /mnt for well over a year now and haven’t had any problems. Previously, I mounted it on
~/Storage
and it also worked fine (though only because I’m the only user in my computer; dual-user systems would result in the other user being unable to access the hard drive).
SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux back at 4.04% on the Desktop. Windows went below 73%English21·1 year agoI get what you mean. I see a decent chunk of often more tech-proficient Linux users putting down Linux Mint, and it saddens me because even though I don’t use Mint anymore, it was still the first distro I properly daily-drove and I still consider it an amazing system for people who are new to Linux.
I’m very glad you’ve been having a good experience with Mint!
SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Linux@lemmy.ml•Flathub has passed 2 billion downloadsEnglish8·1 year agoHonestly, you don’t have to worry about what others say, you should use what works best for you. Personally I find them to be nice and comfortable to use, myself 😅
Yeah, I get you :c
I use CoreCtrl to fix my GPU’s atrocious fan curve, which is a necessity since normally it overheats to high hell. With CoreCtrl, I have a nice fan curve that makes my GPU rarely, if ever, run hotter than 70°C.
SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Linux@lemmy.ml•My /var/tmp folder is endlessly stacking up on "container_images_storage_xxxxxxxxxx" folders?English1·1 year agoDoes all this also apply to distrobox? I don’t use podman, but I do use distrobox, which I think is a front-end for it, but I don’t know if the commands listed here would be the same.
I feel like I’m the only one here who actually likes it when games I loved when I was younger become old/retro. I see it as a badge of honour, like them getting to enter the hall of fame.
Super Mario World isn’t a bad game just because it’s old, it’s just as great now as it was in the 90s. Same with Sunshine. And it makes me happy knowing I grew up with these games - no amount of aging or growing old could take that away from me.
