I installed and ran gentoo in 2005 on a home server that hosted a file sharing repository and php forum for my friends.
In college I ran Ubuntu on my netbook for programming and internet browsing on.
Then in 2021 Windows 11 came out and refused to install on my 2017 laptop. So I threw my hands up and installed EndeavorOS in a dual boot configuration. After a few months, EndeavorOS broke my boot with an update. Threw up my hands again and installed Fedora and haven’t had an issue in years.
I bought a domain and used my domain for email for a few years with Gmail being used. Then one day I switched it to Proton and I didn’t really have to do much because it is the same email address but a different service under the hood.
The thing that takes time is updating all of your accounts and contacts to use your new email. Took years for me. But I’m pretty free to move around now.
I bought a WiFi Brother printer 3 years ago and had a terrible time with Fedora Linux after Google discontinued Google Print services. I eventually gave up and would ask my partner to print from her Windows machine.
We now have a WiFi Canon laser printer and I’m printing from phone, Fedora, and USB memory stick with no issues. Never even installed drivers for anything.

I’ve been contributing business hours and websites to OSM via CoMaps for a few weeks now. OSM needs that as a minimum to make it viable over Google Maps for me. Business discovery with Google Maps will be a huge challenge to match; Google is able to trawl its huge database of reviews for keywords so I can search “vegan cinnamon roll” and get results.
I use Transit App for bus schedules and routing.
CoMaps car/bike/walk/hike navigation has worked pretty well for me, but the turn by turn directions and voice are not as good as Google Maps. I’ve also been finding Google Maps routes are becoming laughably bad and it really irritates me I have to review a route before taking it now. Google keeps trying to route me through alleys and other dumb zig zag paths lately.
Taking an hour doesn’t sound right. Is it a disk or solid state? Do you have an unusual amount of directory hierarchy?
If you have a disk, does it have SMARTT errors reported?

From my very subjective experience: Over the decades I’ve used Lastpass, OnePassword, Bitwarden, and Proton Pass. Proton Pass is my favorite; Bitwarden wasn’t much different, but I find Proton Pass’ UX to be slightly more responsive and to my liking. They are both excellent though and I have my significant other using Bitwarden because they don’t want the other Proton products.
This is very interesting. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these services and products. Obviously it is quite personal, but for me it was nice to compare your ideas against mine. Pretty close other than password manager I would score much differently. Good work and thanks again for sharing.

I believe pop does a river style tiling system. Look up videos on Niri, Cosmic, or PaperWM.
There are many other tiling types too. River is however my favorite and I think most intuitive. Other popular ones are Sway, i3, and HyprLand.

I miss controlling the volume on a per app basis. It gets unwieldy, but it was nice sometimes.
The features of online backup is an online service, you can’t typically just “crack” that. You’d have to reverse engineer the protocol and put a server in between that you control.

I tried it out on Fedora a few months ago and I found alacritty felt faster in nvim. So i stayed on alacritty.
Put graphene on my phone and really like it.
