Cis men have been, and mostly continue to be, the most privileged group in western society. So it’s easy to dismiss anything negative that affects them.

There are a couple of safeguards, but by and large you can. And terminal is a pre-installed Apple app, of course it’s Apple “approved.”

Not getting the internet package (and the associated headaches) was part of the vacation for me.

LLMs are undoubtedly impressive tech that will get better with time. But to anyone singing their praises too emphatically I say ask it something on a topic you are an expert on; you’ll quickly see how fallible they currently are.

Kinda why I put it as a “bonus,” as you’re right it’s subjective. For me, Apple trackpads are perfectly buttery smooth, and they get the accidental touch detection perfect (something my work Windows laptop drives me insane with.)

1. The prices they charge for SSD upgrades is seriously laughably criminal. That said…
2. You could choose to get a MacBook Pro, which starts at a higher storage tier. It’s still going to be more expensive than the air with the same size SSD, but you’ll get an inch larger screen and it is a seriously good screen.
3. I’ve found after years of owning Linux and Mac laptops that I get years longer out of the Mac laptop, all things considered. They may be more up front, but dollars per year they come out ahead.
4. MacOS is UNIX based, so you should feel right at home in terminal.
5. Finally, take advantage of their education pricing. At least in the US, they don’t check for eligibility. So your $1399 1TB MacBook Air is now 1279. Feel a little bit better about that price?

Bonus. The trackpad is head and shoulders above anything I’ve ever used. For me, that’s worth the price of admission alone.

The skip intro/credits feature is nifty, and sonic analysis if you run a music library is worth the purchase price alone.

I enjoy self hosting, but what tipped the scales for me in favor of using Bitwarden’s servers is that I’m 100% confident I’m not as good as hardening my system from being compromised as they are. The vault is going to be encrypted anyway, and I think there’s a lower chance of it falling into the wrong hands if it’s hosted with Bitwarden. Same reason I don’t self-host email.

Plus Bitwarden is a cool company and the product is open source, and the premium features are unreasonably low priced.

I’m with you that you shouldn’t have to, but putting your media directory one level up in a randomly generated directory name isn’t too bad. ~/[random uuid]/media/… may not be a terrible idea in any case.

I have definitely looked into Asahi awhile ago, and knew that was the big one. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that’s the only one, but didn’t know if maybe there were more.
