This is what precisely what I have been saying for so long. Just because LLMs sound smart doesn’t mean they are. They don’t form world views, or even understand ideas or concepts. They are just glorified statistical parrots that predict the next word through a prob distribution.
This is totally aww as long as it is from afar. Closer it gets, more it turns to “oh no”.
But, even considering that LLMs are useful, you have to take into account the immense amount of resources that are consumed which training and inference, especially at a time when we cannot afford to. Personally, I feel like they are not worth that expenditure, for the benefit. Regarding rest of the ML models, they might just get caught in the wave of that backlash, that to be fair only LLMs deserve.
Just to be clear, I am not anti-AI, just anti-hype.
I have a more than surface-level understanding of LLMs, but I am not an expert by any metric, imaginable. LLMs are great for information retrieval tasks like searching through a database of documentation, when the query is in natural language, and it works beyond keyword search like a traditional search engine. But, since they also have synthesis capabilities, they also make shit up.
The issue most people have is that LLMs are nowhere near as capable as corporations are making them out to be and also the amount of money they are spending is simply not in line with the value they can provide to any individual or corporation. Thus, it is a bubble which has always made things harder for the regular people.
If you want to have good analysis of LLMs and their capabilities, I strongly recommend a book called “AI Snake Oil”. It is written by two computer scientists, one teaches at Princeton and other I believe was a grad student under the first one.
What really makes me angry is that billionaires have all the money they can ever want and yet, they are greedy for more. It’s almost as if their entire fucking identity is tied to their financial “valuation”. Fuck these assholes.

I think so too. Even how action potentials are received by a neuron, activate a neuron and how it is passed to another neuron is an amazingly complex process. However, these processes might not contribute to the intelligence. In current models they are abstracted away to direct mathematical transformations. But fundamentally, we simply don’t know how or what gives rise to intelligence or even what is intelligence. So, I am fairly sure that AGI is very far away.
Get fucked, so-called AI companies. Whatever gave these dumb asses any impression that LLMs will lead to AGI? I hope this bubble pops ASAP.

My issue with chatting with LLMs is that the chats are not private and I sure as hell don’t trust the tech companies to not use my deepest secrets to sell me shit.
