1. It’s hilarious that the “too lazy to empty the trash bin” behavior can scale like this. Worst case for me is I pick up a couple things that fall when I empty it. For them… well as you said it doesn’t appear emptiable!

2. I was skeptical this cat shelf design would hold, but I picked one up and for the last year it’s been my cat’s favorite thing. Highly recommend them. Just make sure the suction cups aren’t warped, you put them in hot water, clean the window, follow all instructions etc.

I’ve seen a few videos on these and the benifits of european plug design. My only gripe with it is the size. I know it would be a pain because everything is already built for the the current standard, but an updated “micro” plug would be a lot better.

In fact, why doesn’t the whole world collaborate on a new plug design that takes the best from both and combines into a 110/220 auto sensing plug. Sadly i don’t see that happening any time soon. It’s much more likely that USB-C continues to gain ground and becomes the defacto DC power standard for consumers.

I don’t know why the micro subscription model hasn’t become a thing. I get that even if you do basically no new features on an app it still needs to be updated from time to time as Android changes. So why not have apps be a buck or two a year?

It seems they’re either free, or a $8+ a month. All the fitness apps are insanely priced considering they have very little development and all the data within is crowdsourced. Plus I guarantee they’re selling your health info.

I would have no issue at all subscribing to dozens of apps if they were super cheap. You get a lot of people chipping in $2 and that adds up quick. I’m guessing the reason they don’t is transaction fees and app store cuts.

The built in GPU of any sem-modern Intel CPU can do that for you no problem. Probably even the older ones in those corporate computers. Just check for QuickSync support. If you want something seriously low wattage that can still do one or two 4K streams, get one of those mini PCs with an Intel N100 for cheap.

Can you quickly run me through how USB over IP is helping you out? I get it for devices that are physically distant, but how is the abstraction helping you for reboots? Isn’t it just the server you’re rebooting that talks to the USB device anyway?

That sounds like way too much, unless you have a really congested network or interference in the area. Should be able to get it at least 10x faster, unless you’re taking the web server page load time into account in your latency numbers and not just the network.

I can’t see how it would. Techies are the only people who know what GrapheneOS is, and even then it’s a small percentage of us. The average person still asks if you have an iPhone or a Samsung.

Yeah, but are those Android apps? My understanding is that this Flatpak contains not an emulator, but like a lightweight version of android and the dependencies. That’s going to take up a lot of extra space.

Well, I mean it kind of is a solution. It’s a cloud backup solution. OneDrive doesn’t just keep a single version of your file, there’s versioning, retention policies, etc.

Cloud makes a lot of sense for businesses with small IT staff and a lot of users because while it’s not fully in your control, it comes with all the things being discussed here “out of the box” and scales infinitely.

For self hosters there’s some fun and power in doing everything yourself, but even then adding cloud as part of your backup (if done securely) is usually a pretty good idea.

I still have it and I can’t get off it because my whole flow depends on a feature that no other launcher seems to have.

I have all my apps in folders, but the folders when tapped will launch the first app in the folder. If I swipe up on them the folder opens.

So for exameple I have what looks like a Camera icon. If I tap it Camera opens as expected, but if I swipe up on it all my photo related apps are there. It allows me to keep a simple easy to use home screen but then all my apps are grouped underneath. It’s awesome and the best feature Nova ever made.

That’s basically what I do right now except I do have a domain and my ISP doesn’t restrict inbound ports like 443 so it works fine.

What added security do you get by using a VPS besides obscuring your home IP? I can definitely see benifits to not leaking your home address, but otherwise the reverse proxy and wireguard tunnels don’t actually add any increased security for the extra steps. You could just host a reverse proxy at home, and any flaws Jellyfin could have in their app would still be exposed.

I’m not knocking your solution, I’m just in a similar place and considering if I want to go through the extra hurdle for a VPS if I don’t need one.

When lunch time comes around I unplug my work laptop from its USB-C docking station and plug my phone in. Works prrfect with my ultrawide, keyboard, and mouse. Then I watch YouTube or Plex while I eat.

I seriously won’t consider a Pixel until it can do the same. Samsung’s private folder implementation is also excellent. I can have a second VPN in there. I’ve been wanting virtualization on mobile for a while and this is close.

I think P2P is still the way to go. Sure it’s not perfect, but it’s simpler and by it’s very nature doesn’t require the infrastructure we know will be a problem.

Plus, don’t forget screen sharing in discord isn’t very good as is (720p30) if you’re not a paid user.

Thunder also allows user tags. Highly recommend it.

Direct input reeeeealy needs to get with the times.

Current platforms like Lemmy are NOT ready for massive amounts of users. They have very poor moderation controls, no effective strategy to combat bots, and no money to pay people for it.

The only reason Lemmy is usable right now is because it has nerdy people using it in good faith. If it were to gain critical mass it would collapse under the deluge of trolls and bots.

It’s a quaint little place, and I like it for being that.
