Two things are at play here:
-
Out of all the recommendations and ads, you only notice those who are actually relevant, so you’re biased.
-
One would be surprised by how easy it is to predict interests and patterns based on very little information; there’s no need to spy all private conversations for that.

Same can be done without a mouse using ctrl+click on Windows and Linux (usually), or cmd+click on macOS.
Two-finger tap also works on mobile Safari.
I have plenty of RAM and I run Linux on a VM. Works like a charm. You can even use open source hypervisors like UTM.
I wouldn’t bother running it on bare metal just yet.

Drew Got No Clue@lemmy.worldto Linux@lemmy.ml•Looks like bing chat is programmed to insist that RedHat RHEL is not violating the GPL…English0·2 years agoThis has the best explanation I’ve seen: https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2023/jun/23/rhel-gpl-analysis/
In particular, see the section “What Exactly Is the RHEL Business Model?”.
Or, if you want a short sentence to read only:
Whether that analysis is correct is a matter of intense debate, and likely only a court case that disputed this particular issue would yield a definitive answer on whether that disagreeable behavior is permitted (or not) under the GPL agreements.
Drew Got No Clue@lemmy.worldto Linux@lemmy.ml•Looks like bing chat is programmed to insist that RedHat RHEL is not violating the GPL…English0·2 years agoThe point is that it does not violate the GPL.
Drew Got No Clue@lemmy.worldto Linux@lemmy.ml•Looks like bing chat is programmed to insist that RedHat RHEL is not violating the GPL…English2·2 years agoYes. I just don’t know if it’s good to phrase it as “RHEL customers are legally allowed to share the code”, since as soon as they do it they won’t be allowed to be customers anymore lol (assuming Red Hat finds out)
Drew Got No Clue@lemmy.worldto Linux@lemmy.ml•Looks like bing chat is programmed to insist that RedHat RHEL is not violating the GPL…English0·2 years agoIt’s simple: they can redistribute it since it’s GPL, but if they do so, they break their business contract with RedHat, so they’re not customers anymore and can’t see the source code in the future.
GPL doesn’t mean that they must give the code to everyone, only that you have those rights as long as you have the software. So RedHat is not forced to have everyone as a customer, and according to them, distributing the code kicks you out.
They can still re-distribute the current source they have, but will not have access to future source code.
That’s not how I understood it. I think saying “closed source” is kind of misleading.

Discoverability is almost 0 and I can’t easily find any videos that I’d like to watch, as you said. I assume most people would leave once they see what’s on the home page.

(And a little conversation I had with a colleague)1·2 years agoI would argue that Google is much worse—their entire business model is built around collecting personal information and selling advertisements.
If we talk about smartphones, Android is open source, but is very limited without Google Services (GrapheneOS is great for privacy and security, but then you cannot pay with your phone, for example, because it needs to be approved by Google).
Linux on smartphones is more of a proof-of-concept, and not really usable as a daily driver.
So, Apple is the ‘least bad’ option now. (and there are ways to sideload FOSS apps)
Drew Got No Clue@lemmy.worldto Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•What do you think about Apple and its ecosystem? (And a little conversation I had with a colleague)5·2 years agoApple indeed has some great hardware, and their ARM-based computers have zero real competition. Among big companies, it’s also quite good re: privacy, for the most part.
Semi-random: I was happy to see so many Flatpak being released for
arm64
too (as on “Apple Silicon”, working great by the way)Tip for others with ARM: the Fedora official download page only lists Kinoite 38 for arm and Siilverblue 37 and no Sway, BUT they all work perfectly fine if you rebase with
rpm-ostree
after installing Kinoite. The power of image-based updates!
I might actually end up disabling swap in the end. I wanted to update that apparently I “fixed” the problem (not sure if permanently) by turning off the pc, unplugging the PSU, and holding down the power button for 30 seconds. Normal reboots weren’t enough. I’ll take it for now.
