  • WHO IS USING AI TO RESPOND TO EMAILS? Like, by the time to “craft” the ultimate response, you could have just written the email.

This may be my bias as an engineer (not software, but chemical), there’s not really much faffing about in an email. You just politely respond, or politely make a query. It’s not very long, typically, and even if it is, an LLM isn’t gonna help you.

You don’t have to sugar coat anything unless there’s some fuck up you’re trying to soften. You just go “Hi xyz, could you please clarify when the design temperature is changing here?”.

Wtf is there you can use an LLM for in an email?

I have only used it for software troubleshooting, as it’s quite nifty there, even if it’s information is out of date, it gets versions confused, etc, still gets me out of a bind or spits out random ideas to try.

But emails? Those short form messages, just barely longer than texts?

Are we actually serious? It’s not a report

  • I think it’s insane using it for work. I’ve spoken to people who use it to send emails… I mean by the time you write the prompt, you could just write the email.

The one area, I think, it’s very handy is language and language learning.

    It’s in the name LLM.

For anything up to a native speaker, it’s absolutely fantastic at stringing a sentence together.

As long as you’re not trying to actually DO anything other than learning.

  • If this is true, I envy you for being shielded from the abomination of a measurement system USC is 🥲

People in Australia still use feet and inches for height even though they use it practically no where else, and I’m guessing most people could not use it reliably in any other context.

“That guy is 6 feet tall”

    Australians: “Oh, okay”

    “That’s 50 feet away”

    Australians: “What”

Drives me nuts. I will be that annoying person who prompts people to say it in metres or cm. “I’m 180” (said as “one-eighty”) is just as fast, and in a system we actually understand.

    Ugh.

  • This is me. I’ve always been too lazy to switch (I have some of the worst hardware for it. I’m running my old surface pro into the ground and have hardly any internal storage so hard to dual boot for testing).

But now, well hey, Windows 11 is stupid, windows 10 has been spying since forever.

Linux it is, thanks Microsoft for giving me the push I needed.

You know, later in the year. When I have to.

    I’m only human
