  • I half agree but also I think with every extra step reddit takes like banning people for upvoting posts that mention Luigi we see more people interested in a freer alternative.

What lemmy needs is some new use cases reddit doesn’t have, I’ve been thinking about making an adversary debate platform that basically just offers a different format to a thread designed to make understanding events easier. Also I want to try making gamified chat modes where the main image is altered based on agreement or disagreement in the thread, basically an info graphic of the thread.

I’d love to make some game experiences on it too, I was thinking of a similar collaborative experience where user interactions in the thread alter the main image gameboard - would be great to use the existing floss infrastructure to make something open and fun.

  • People with this mentality are so odd to me, like you must be very young or actively avoided witnessing any of the endless stream of disruptor technologies which have come and ended once untouchable business by making them obsolete.

That or you’ve conveniently forgotten all the times you said something like ‘streaming will never replace video rental’ or ‘they’ll never let VoIP displace long distance call charges’ then reality has proven you wrong.

I call the other side of the world almost every day for several hours and it costs me absolutely nothing, when I was a kid we had to time how long a call to the other side of town lasted because it was so expensive.

Tech regularly makes things significantly cheaper, and not just on the scale of things like lace costing so much that lace curtains were a sign of high affluence before the industrial revolution. Have you ever had a encyclopedia salesman knock at your door? No? It was common before Wikipedia and the internet absolutely destroyed that business model and gave everyone access to information for free.

  • For many it’s not the only thing but it’s an important option when something comes up or things don’t go according to plan, when the choice is ends don’t meet so you need to borrow money from a predatory lending service to avoid eviction or repossession or starvation then having the option of working evenings and weekends is a life saver.

Likewise people who work like I do where I can earn what I need to most the time, even do well occasionally, but there might be a quiet period out of my control then gig work is again a real life saver.

And yes there are ‘alternatives’ but once this is killed they get killed too, I’ve been looking at the job market recently and it’s very hard to find work that isn’t ‘you will work to our schedule which might change on a whim and if you ever so much as ask about a week or two unpaid time off you’re out’

They already mostly fucked up gig work here in the uk, my American friends have a far easier time and earn better because we purposely scuppered them so that people can’t have any self sufficiency, freedom or determination. If I was in charge there would be a government body that helps people get in on work like this when needed, not policies to make sure people in difficult times or positions can’t do anything but devote their entire being to finding a corporation to live for.

  • ‘I never want to make it obvious’

This is a huge red flag to women, what you’re essentially doing is trying to create a power imbalance where you maintain the safe and defended position of acting not interested while they take all the social risk of putting themselves out there. This gives you a much better position in any conversation or disagreement and it allows you to hold the power of humiliation over their head - a situation no one wants to be in.

The fact you’re targeting women in this way that you feel are more attractive than you exacerbates it because it makes it seem that you don’t really care about them at all and just want to tick the hot gf box.

People often say that women hit on men in happy relationships and this is somewhat true but not because they’re horny homewreckers but because the guy has stopped acting creepy and manipulative towards them and just seem like decent normal people. When you say you don’t flirt what you mean is difficult to tell because you’re obviously targeting these women and talking to them, even asking them out and getting rejected apparently so I don’t know what you’re actually doing but it’s not acting normal, friendly, and like you consider them anything but a target to throw your Pokeball at.

No one, including you, wants to date someone that doesn’t make them feel good and add to their lives in a positive and joyful way - in what world does ‘you’re hotter than me therefore I want you as a possession I can have sex with’ make someone feel any of those things? That’s the vibe they’re getting when you refuse to give them even just flirting, who is going to say ‘oh i met this guy, he’s cold to me and makes me kinda feel awkward I can’t wait to spend more time with him’

Make someone feel good, enjoy spending time with you, and demonstrate that you’re the sort of person worth getting to know better - which by the way includes being open to self change and personal improvement. Let them see that they will be happier in a relationship with you than not being in a relationship with you.

And this means also that you have to find someone that will be happier in a relationship with you, women aren’t interchangeable and they exist on a much more complex scale than ‘hot body = value’ which is where your head seems to be stuck, looks are one of the least important parts of a relationship which is lucky for a skinny ballet arms boy like you… you need someone you can talk to, can laugh with, can feel safe with, can grow and explore with.

And yes if you don’t want that sort of relationship and want a woman that only cares about outward appearance then get jacked and earn a shit load of money, seems like a miserable life to me but I’m in love with a fat woman (who I admit is very attractive) because we understand each other and support each other and enjoy each other in ways I never even knew possible - we bonded over shared interests, fell in love over long and tender conversations, and worked through difficulties by being honest and caring.

  • Ironically though bootstrapping is also now a term that means to install computer systems or fabrication hardware starting with the most basic tool then using that to create the next tool needed in the install process - going from a hammer to a laser cutter is a lot of steps but it’s not impossible.

I always thought it was popularized by the guy who rode a cannon ball into battle and fought a giant crocodile - barron von munchausen, from where we get the name for people who fake medical conditions- but his claim was to have saved himself from drowning by pulling himself up by his own hair. I wonder if that 1785 book why boot straps were mentioned in the textbook you mention.

  • Yeah, I’d sort my life out then spend a load hiring people to work on useful things simply because I want them to exist, open source and creative commons things that exist for everyone.

It’d give me a sense of purpose and something to focus on, mostly things that should exist already like a really good and efficient small washing machine that can be made by any small fabrication company, easily repairable and upgradable so it’s cheaper for people living in apartments than using overpriced coin op machines landlords often install in utility rooms.

There are so many ways of making actual positive differences in the world, if people with excess time and money worked on projects like this then everyone could live little better, meaning more people would be able to work on things and life would be better for everyone which would mean that people are less desperate and struggling so places would be safer and nicer which would mean there’s more nice places to visit and people are happier so doing more interesting and fun things which means no one would need so much money to enjoy life in a way even billionaires can’t afford now.

The good thing is we don’t really need rich people because the workers always do all the actual work so by working together as a people we can donthings like create vast networks of informative videos helping each other fix our cars - an example which has already happened and greatly benefitted many people I know and myself.

The weird guy making videos of how to change spark plugs on am obscure old car and getting 40 views is doing far more towards making a better world than then greedy asshole that makes proprietary and subscription based exercise bikes no matter how much money he manages to hoard for himself.
