I have a gift card to Aldi I’ve been sitting on since Christmas. Your comment has inspired me to go spend all $20 on items from that aisle. I will update with what that afforded me and how ashamed I am tomorrow

kofe@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Everybody talks about beliefs like they're this big important thing.English3·1 month agoSpeak for yourself, please. I am willing to change my beliefs with new information. Unless you have evidence of an asteroid heading toward our planet or whatever, I’ll stick with what I do know.
Again, faith means belief without evidence. You have every indication the sun will be fine, the earth will be fine, etc.
kofe@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Everybody talks about beliefs like they're this big important thing.English4·1 month agoKnowledge is built on justified, true beliefs. I know and believe the sun will rise tomorrow. You can believe shit on faith, or lack of evidence, but I’d disagree if someone claims to “know” gods or ghosts exist and ask for their evidence.
I would not be surprised if my chonker baby figured that out and waited until the old lady had hers dispensed then bullied her out of the way. Anyone have tips for preventing that?
Knowingly conditioning me without my understanding.
Being caring also involves including their consent in the process. Idk, I’d be really upset by my partner knowingly doing this without talking to me about it. But then again I guess it could depend how they react if I found out before they just admit to it. Like if they got defensive and didn’t understand why I’m upset. I’m not saying the whole thing is horrible, just hiding it.
Also depends on the person and their values, I guess. If you value someone doing that kind of emotional labor for you without you having to think about it. I’m very much used to doing the emotional labor in relationships.
Damn. I just realized maybe I’m displacing here though cuz I’m a bit jealous they’re using a method that works, whereas I’m single for a plethora of reasons.
We can’t get a dog’s consent to engage in experiments. Continuing with this method after realizing and not talking with him about it would be intentionally ignoring consent.

kofe@lemmy.worldto Work Reform@lemmy.world•US Department of Labor to cease and desist all investigative and enforcement activity under rescinded Executive Order 11246English1·6 months agoI’m ok with discriminating against billionaires to the extent that they shouldn’t exist. I don’t believe there should be such disproportionate power. There is a general trend of white men having the most, but it’s not exclusive. I don’t therefore believe white men all disproportionately have more power and discriminate against them. Does that make sense?
If not, please do explain how anything I’ve said is racist. I’m hoping this was just a misunderstanding and you’re not implying that calling out systemic racism is racist in itself. That would put us in quite the pickle lol
kofe@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are dating apps a fraud since the beginning?English2·7 months agoI met my last long term partner on a dating app, but these days it’s not a route I’d want to take. I met someone on discord more recently in a really wonderful community that allowed me to get to know him and make other friends with none of the same pressure
kofe@lemmy.worldto Work Reform@lemmy.world•US Department of Labor to cease and desist all investigative and enforcement activity under rescinded Executive Order 11246English1·7 months agoNot all people have the same opportunity. To say all people are the same is to deny systemic reality. Lemme know when everyone has similar wealth or power to Trump, Musk, Zuckerberg, etc.

kofe@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I wonder what people did before baby foodEnglish1·7 months agoThe only reference I have to go on off the top of my head there is Django Unchained where a difference was noted for those working in the house vs fields. I imagine it was used as emotional manipulation to bribe them with better living conditions in some cases, though
kofe@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I wonder what people did before baby foodEnglish5·7 months agoJokes aside, there have been cultures where women went into labor and would deliver by themselves away from the tribe. It’s been a while since I read about it, but iirc if she returned without the newborn is was either unacknowledged or at minimum just accepted as her decision. Imagine having a still birth or a child with extreme physical deficiencies prior to modern medicine. I do remember thinking when I read it that it surely resulted in women not returning, too, because childbirth can be risky even with a team of professionals.
Also wet nurses have been a thing, and the practices with that range from understandable to horrific - think wives of slave owners not wanting to breast feed, so they force a slave that’s given birth recently take on the duty, usually as a priority over their own child. Course, there’s always been women who couldn’t produce milk, so it has been done altruistically, too

kofe@lemmy.worldto HistoryPorn@lemmy.world•A staged propaganda photo of Italy's facist leader, Benito Mussolini "harvesting" wheat, 1938English2·10 months agoI see where you’re coming from. It could branch out to any person or organization, though, wouldn’t you think? Like I brought up in my original comment, I “stage” my home for myself, firstly, because it makes me feel comfortable. I also do a lot of video calls for work, school, and with friends. So I wonder where the delineation is. When and why does it become inauthentic?
kofe@lemmy.worldto HistoryPorn@lemmy.world•A staged propaganda photo of Italy's facist leader, Benito Mussolini "harvesting" wheat, 1938English6·10 months agoI’m in a charged enough environment that seeing your aggressive language is too much for me to read beyond three sentences. It doesn’t seem you read my full comment based on those three, anyway. You don’t need to reply or repeat yourself but if you don’t mind clarifying, would you mind considering running it by ChatGPT or something to make sure it’s civil first? I don’t think my comment warranted this attitude. Thank you.
kofe@lemmy.worldto HistoryPorn@lemmy.world•A staged propaganda photo of Italy's facist leader, Benito Mussolini "harvesting" wheat, 1938English171·10 months agoWords can have multiple meanings. Harris didn’t go to McDonald’s and work a shift as a politician to get the photo op. Her showing up for her “shift” at the White House isn’t any more staged, imo. If you want to say that the entire White House is staged, shit like that, then by that metric everyone’s job is staged. Which, hey, if you find value in “staging” your home or work area, that’s great. I think we should differentiate how Trump & Mussolini here clearly made their decision to do these jobs for just long enough for cameras and potential voters, though. There’s really no other substance to take away from the pictures.
